Vintage Pokémon Cards Worth Money

Base Set, 1st Edition, Shadowless — how to spot the valuable ones in an old binder.

Updated June 2026 · 6 min read

Got an old Pokémon collection? A few cards could be worth real money. Here's what to look for.

1st Edition

Look for the small "Edition 1" stamp on the left of the card art. 1st Edition WOTC-era cards (1999–2000) — especially holos like Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur — are the most valuable vintage.

Shadowless

Early Base Set cards printed without the drop-shadow on the right of the art box are "Shadowless" — rarer than the later "Unlimited" print and worth more.

WOTC era + holos

Anything with the WOTC (Wizards of the Coast) logo and a holofoil image from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, or the early sets is worth checking. Condition is everything at this age.
